Braces: What, Why, Who, How, Where, And When - Articles Surfing

What: dental braces are devices used to correct teeth alignment with respect to bite (such as underbites, overbites, etc) or various cosmetic or structural flaws. They come in a variety of designs, depending on the material and purpose that it is used for. For more information, please consult a dental professional.

Why: Structural flaws of the teeth and bite can lead to the exacerbation of problems that cause pain in the teeth and jaws. Cosmetic flaws of the teeth can affect confidence and emotional well-being, although the treatment itself can also cause similar emotional problems.

Who: dental braces are designed and manipulated by orthodontists, with most orthodontic patients being children or teenager; however, there is a growing trend of adults seeking treatment. Orthodontic services must be provided by a licensed dentist trained in orthodontics, which requires the completion of a 2-3 year additional post-doctoral training. The certification is provided as a specialty certificate in orthodontics.

How: the treatment involves four steps.
1. The initial consultation to determine the procedure required and design of braces.
2. The fitting of braces to the patient
3. The maintenance of the braces by the patient, and the perioidc or prescribed adjustments made by the orthodontist
4. The post-procedural examination and additional procedures.
All treatments carry some risks and possible complications. Please see your dental professional for further advice.

Where: see your nearest dentist (for referral) or orthodontist. There are also general practitioners who provide orthodontic services.

When: How long the treatment takes is dependant on the extensiveness of the remedial action to be provided (i.e. how severe the problem is), but other factors such as age and location of the problem also come into play. On average, treatments take around two years, although with good planning and an experienced practitioner, the length of time can be decreased. Please note that time and costs may vary substantially depending on the country and type of treatment required.
