Experience A Unique Spin On A Caribbean Tradition At Cayman Carnival Batabano - Articles Surfing

When visiting the Caribbean, many tourists try to participate in activities and events that highlight the vibrant spirit of the region. One of the most well-known celebrations held in the Caribbean is the annual festival of Carnival. While most islands celebrate Carnival before the Easter season, Grand Cayman saves their biggest annual party for the first week of May. Taking inspiration from the turtles that arrive on Grand Cayman's beaches, the Batabano Carnival features live bands, parades and special events for children. Though the Batabano Carnival doesn't follow the traditional Carnival schedule, Grand Cayman's annual party has quickly become one of the Caribbean's most anticipated annual events.

As the Cayman Carnival Batabano was initially developed to celebrate the appearance of turtles on local beaches, the wonders of the Caribbean Sea influence many of the carnival's events. Launched in 1984 by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, the Cayman Carnival Batabano was named for the tracks left behind by turtles that use the island's beaches as nesting grounds. Though the festival started small just 24 years ago, the Cayman Carnival Batabano is now supported by numerous local and international sponsors, while the island continues to welcome greater numbers of visitors from throughout the world. Furthermore, while the festival drew its initial inspiration from the island's beloved sea turtles, the Cayman Carnival Batabano has also incorporated many of the activities of traditional Carnival celebrations, allowing visitors to experience the most exciting Caribbean traditions in a unique environment.

The most important tradition on display at the Cayman Carnival Batabano is known as Mas ' the common term for masquerading bands. Borrowing distinct elements from African, native Caribbean and colonial European cultures, the Mas performances are known for their colorful outfits and creative dances. Inspired by the underwater life of the Caribbean Sea, participants construct elaborate costumes and props, hoping to take home some of the annual prizes. As the Mas bands march in the main parade, dancers perform expertly choreographed routines, many of which reflect on local concerns and broader social issues. Meanwhile, the sounds of Caribbean Soca and steel drum music permeate the streets of Grand Cayman throughout the celebration. This year, most of Cayman Carnival Batabano's best events ' including the street parade and dance ' will take place on Saturday, May 3.

One week prior to many of Cayman Carnival Batabano's events, the island-wide celebration will begin on April 26 with the Junior Carnival Batabano. Developed in 2002 and granted its own day-long celebration in 2005, the Junior Carnival Batabano offers local students an opportunity to participate in this important Caribbean custom, while the family-friendly events have since become tradition for local and visiting families. Taking place on the Saturday before the main Carnival celebration, the live entertainment of Junior Carnival is performed entirely by the talented youth of Grand Cayman. Local students prepare for the parade of Junior Carnival by learning about the diverse customs of Carnival, designing and constructing their own vibrant costumes and practicing their performances as masquerading bands. While the people of Grand Cayman developed Junior Carnival Batabano to preserve the customs of Mas and costume making, visitors can enjoy the youthful spirit and exciting events of this special day.

As Grand Cayman has managed to put an incredibly exciting spin on one of the Caribbean's most exciting traditions, there is no better time to visit the island than during the annual Cayman Carnival Batabano celebration. Celebrating both the diverse cultural past of Grand Cayman and the cosmopolitan present of the Caribbean region, Cayman Carnival Batabano allows tourists to witness the best of both worlds. With plenty of live music, vibrant dance performances and family-friendly fun, Cayman Carnival Batabano offers visitors an incredible opportunity to experience one of the most captivating parties in the world.
