What Is French Country Style? - Articles Surfing

French Country style decor may not be as difficult as you think to achieve in your home. A few simple touches can give your home the look you are looking for.

One technique to gain the French Country style is to use stencils on your walls. Stenciling can be a bit time consuming, but the amount of detail is up to you. Some people are happy just using one or two colors on their stenciled designs while others prefer to go into the details and really make the stenciled designs stand out beautifully.

You'll also want to have accent pieces that have stenciled designs on them. These don't have to match what you have done on your walls, but should complement them. They should look aged rather than new. The overall color of the walls matters as well. A lovely soft yellow or blue may work very well as the primary color.

Wooden bowls will also go well. Think about things that look handmade rather than store bought. You don't want to look like a bunch of money was spent, yet you do not want to look poor either.

Fabrics should be in something of a vintage pattern. You don't want a modern look in a French Country kitchen. Curtains will go better than blinds in this case. Your tablecloth should also have a vintage look. Toile patterns go very well.

For lighting, consider a chandelier that doesn't look modern. Maybe it will have crystal on it, or some lovely scroll work. Work area lighting can be more challenging, as you want a good amount of light yet don't want to go too modern.

Yet another great touch for French Country style is crown molding. This gives such an air of elegance, you might just love it.

Don't forget to decorate your walls beyond the stenciling. Hang items that have a vintage look about them, such as old kitchen utensils. Try pictures that have a French countryside look to them. Hang old, decorated plates.

The French Country look is great for making your kitchen feel very homey.
