Tips For Taking Care Of Your Hammock - Articles Surfing

Now that you have bought a hammock and are excited to start relaxing it's important to keep in mind how to properly take care of your hammock. It only makes sense to properly care for your hammock, so that the enjoyment it brings you can last for many years. Here are a few tips we have for keeping your hammock safe.

Hammock Washing Tips

Most hammocks are washable, but it must be done in a certain way. If you own a rope hammock you will want to handle it by the loop ends to avoid tangling. Regardless of type, it should also be washed in cold water using the gentle cycle. Use only a very mild detergent, such as Woolite, and do not wash with any other items. You should hang it or lay it flat to dry.

Another good option is to hand wash your hammock. By hand washing your rope hammock, you will avoid any tangling that might of occurred with using a washer. All you do is fill a bucket with water and a mild detergent, hold the hammock by a loop end and dip into the bucket. Squeeze the hammock and push it in and out of the bucket. Then, hang it on a hook to rinse and hang to dry.

Storing Tips

Unless you live in a climate that allows you to use your hammock all year, it is best to store the hammock inside when not in use. This is especially true for cotton hammocks which can fade if left in the elements. No matter what the material, it is best to store the hammock when it isn't being used. This will extend its life and will last for many years.

Be sure your hammock is completely dry before storing. If it is not, it will be a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

If you are storing a rope hammock, be sure that it has been carefully folded to avoid any tangling. Also, remember to handle your rope hammock from the loop ends. Another option for storing rope hammocks (instead of folding it) is to hang it from a hook. Be sure that the hammock is not resting on the ground and that it is only hung from a loop end.

Care Tips

- Protect It ' If you have a fabric hammock, protect it by spraying it with Scotchgard or a similar protectant. Should you spill your brightly colored tropical drink, it will wipe right off.

- By The Sea? - If the hammock is exposed to sea water, will need to be rinsed occasionally to lessen the effects of the salt water.

- Don't Rip It ' Be careful if you are wearing jewelry or clothing with buttons or rivets. These items can easily become snagged on a rope hammock and create a hole. If you do notice that some of the strings have become separated, grab them, give them a tug and tie them back together.

One of the most important tips for extending the life of your hammock is to help, by any means, to lessen the effects of the weather and salty air. That being said, you bought the hammock to enjoy it, so enjoy it! Don't be so worried about it becoming weathered that you don't enjoy it to the fullest.

If your well-used and well-loved hammock begins to fade and fray, you can always retire it when the time is right and buy a new one!
